Ink Master’s Kyle Dunbar: Tattoo Artist and MMA Fan
March 25, 2014
Ink Master’s Kyle Dunbar understands a little of both worlds. Hailing from Flint, Mich., Dunbar has been refining his tattooing skills for two decades. The parallels between his career and the growth of MMA are abundant—hard work, dedication and sacrifice. The self-taught artist found himself in the limelight on the third and fourth seasons of Spike TV’s reality show, much the way that up-and-coming fighters have on the network’s past MMA-themed series.

Kyle Dunbar might be too real for reality TV. The Flint, Mich., native has never been one to keep quiet when something doesn’t sit well with him. It’s a trait that got him kicked off Spike TV’s tattoo-competition show, “Ink Master,” in 2014, after a near fight with one of the judges.
It’s also a trait that’s earned him a considerable amount of fame, which he’s now using for a good cause — tattooing wounded veterans.

Two of the canvases were respected in the world of mixed martial arts: professional fighter Frank Trigg, and former fighter Jimmy Smith, who is now the host of Bellator Fighting Championship.
Dunbar chose Smith for the canvas of his tattoo, and chose Joshua Hibbard for the challenge's most difficult tattoo: a mask on a man's lower back with only a couple inches of space to draw, since a previous tattoo had already taken up most of the back.
